Railroad Retirement, Survivor, Disability, Unemployment, and Sickness Benefits The Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), an independent federal agency, administers retirement, survivor, disability, unemployment, and sickness insurance for railroad workers and their families. During FY2021, the RRB paid $13.2 billion in retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to approximately 519,000 beneficiaries. Of those benefit payments, 62.7% was paid to retired workers, 5.7% to disabled workers, 14.8% to spouses, and 16.3% to survivors. In the same fiscal year, RRB paid an additional $270.9 million in unemployment and sickness benefits to approximately 41,000 claimants.
